Simeon 'Sim' Templeman was an incredibly accomplished jockey, having won seven famous races including the Epson Derby three times, The Oaks three times and the St Leger.
Born to a farming family in Everingham in 1805, Sim began racing at just 14 years old at Malton Races. By the age of 16 he won his first race at Catterick, and his reputation soon grew.
Sim was noted for his unusual riding style; said to have been of "small and wiry stature", Sim rode with his legs out straight so his toes were in front of his horses shoulders.
At 28 years old, he garnered the interest of the 6th Duke of Leeds, George Osborne.
In 1839, at 34, he won the Epsom Derby on Bloomsbury at the odds of 25/1. The race was run in a snowstorm.

Sim went on to win the race another two times - on 'Cossack' in 1847 and 'Surplus' in 1848.
